The florists at Marlow Floralworks believe that plants speak for themselves. They can greet you at your door with a warm, welcoming feeling, inviting you and your guests into your home. That’s why they recommend spending some time creating outdoor planters.
They’ve shared their advice on creating the perfect planters to suit your home, yourself, and your lifestyle.
Consider your space
Be realistic with sun exposure, space, height and the amount of traffic in the area when choosing your plants. You may already have an idea of what you want, but it is important to choose plants that will thrive in your specific location. Full sun plants will not be happy on your shady covered porch, no matter how much you love them.
Know your personal limits
Know yourself. Do you need something low maintenance, or do you enjoy spending time maintaining something more demanding? Let your answer guide your decisions when choosing plants, so you don’t end up with one that is too high maintenance for you.
Consider visual interest
Think about composition, and how to add interest, colour and height. We recommend groups of two or three pots at a front entrance to create a varied look. If the height of your entryway allows, consider adding height with climbing plants.
Choose plants with similar needs
When choosing plants to group together in a planter, one key thing is to ensure that their water and sunlight needs are compatible. You don’t want to plant shade loving plants mixed in with full sun flowers, one of them will not get the care they need.
If you’re planning on taking a lengthy summer vacation, or even just a few shorter trips, it is important to consider maintenance while you are gone. It’s never nice to come home from a holiday to dead plants at your front door. Low maintenance plants like succulents are amazing if you want to be able to leave them without worrying about a lack of water. Bromeliads are another low-maintenance favourite of ours. If your plants are going to need water during the time you are away, consider creating a dripping system to keep them moist or having a neighbour water them.
Don’t skimp on the pot
Lightweight, plastic pots may be appealing to your budget, but depending on their size, they may not stand up to the weather. If your front steps are exposed to the elements, make sure the pot you choose has enough weight to keep it upright when the wind blows.
Use a pot liner
The secret to gorgeous planters year-round? Using a pot liner! When your summer flowers are finished, this will make it easy to remove them from the planter and insert a new arrangement of fall-friendly plants, and so on as the seasons change.
Make it fun
The important thing is to enjoy your planter! A great way to add fun, and even get the kids involved, is to add in plants that are fun to take care of, like strawberries or small pepper plants.
