Whether it’s a summer with rain, smoke, or sunshine; Calgarians are some of the keenest Canadians who are always looking to find the best patios to enjoy! While Summer ‘19 has been rainier than we might prefer, there have been plenty of sunny, summery days to make the most of. If you’re looking to truly enjoy the great outdoors in these last few months of summer, we’ve got the best spots to take in the sunshine (and a few tasty treats). Fourth Street: one street, a thousand avenues to a fantastic patio!

This Calgary staple features an uber-kitchen and wunderbar certain to please you on a hot summer’s day. Tucked along the length of the upstairs restaurant is a vibrant patio, complete with wooden pergola to provide some shade on those extra-bright days.

Enjoy rowdy conversations with your friends without being overwhelmed by traffic noise out front. We recommend trying the Moscow Mule to quench your thirst with a bit of a kick. Pair it with the famous big pretzel and add the bier cheese sauce for a tasty snack you will be craving over and over again!

La Boulangerie

If you’re not a cocktail kind of person, don’t worry! Just next door to WURST is yet another Calgary hot spot, La Boulangerie. Out front is a quaint patio that will make you feel like you’re sitting on a cobblestone street in Paris, France with beautiful rattan bistro sets set back from the sidewalk the perfect people-watching distance.

This family-owned restaurant serves up exquisite lattes alongside treats that are perfect for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Try the smoked salmon crepe for any meal, or the famous nutella banana crepe. If you like, you can always take home dessert in the form of a kouign amann, or a box of famous macarons handcrafted by master pâtissier Yann Blanchard.

Not only does Añejo make pretty spectacular pancakes each year for the Annual Pancake Showdown, they have an extensive tequila and taco selection sure to put a smile on your face! Their cute patio features bar-height seating right out front, allowing you the perfect perch for people-watching. Whether you’d like to sip a tequila margarita made with one of their over 200 tequilas, or enjoy table-side guacamole, Añejo has the perfect drink or snack for you!

Plus you know even with all the spicy jalapeños, you won’t get too hot sitting and sipping on the patio – they’ve got plenty of umbrellas to cool you off. Muy caliente!

One of Calgary’s most iconic outdoor dining destinations is Earl’s Tin Palace. This patio went under extensive renovations to make it one of the dreamiest spots to take in the sunshine and sights along 4th Street. Outdoor fireplaces, a beautiful pergola and cozy tables are great for everything from date night, girl’s night or just enjoying a relaxing afternoon to yourself.

We recommend visiting from 3:00pm – 6:00pm or 9:00pm to close from Sunday through Thursday to take advantage of their great happy hour specials. Enjoy a refreshing aperol spritz, the perfect patio cocktail, for only $7.50.

Vin Room Mission

We love Vin Room Mission for its fabulous food, fantastic service and double patio offering! The street level patio is dog friendly, so bring your four legged bestie along and they will be able to enjoy treats and amenities while you enjoy wining and dining.

If you’re looking for a romantic escape, we recommend you ask to be seated on the rooftop patio. SInk into the beautiful, oversized furniture and let the bird songs and trees block out any traffic or street level excitement that might distract you from your date. While you’re there, try one of their divine tapas items like the turmeric-infused crab cakes or a platter of fresh-shucked oysters. Pair any of their dishes with a glass or bottle of wine. Vin Room offers a unique and varied selection of global wines certain to please any palate.

Rose and Crown

We love the expansive patio at Rose and Crown! Located conveniently near 4 St and 17 Ave, this Calgary classic features an incredible daily Happy Hour with plenty of food AND drink specials on for $5! The Rose and Crown patio features tall walls and plenty of seating, so you feel removed from the bustle of the city while still having plenty of room for all of your friends!

Rose and Crown also features live music and entertainment regularly. Make sure to follow them on social to find the latest performance listings!

If you’re looking for some food with some heat to match the weather, look no further than Rajdoot! A Mission staple for over 25 years, Rajdoot brings amazing Indian food to the community. Two patios, one on each side of the entrance, are the perfect spot to kick back and people watch while enjoying some of our favourite dishes. Try the eggplant bhartha with a side of rotis for soaking up every delicious bite, or the tangy and spicy prawn patia parsi.

Bonus: Rajdoot is conveniently located one block from the Elbow River and its many pathways, so why not enjoy a post meal walk?

Joyce on 4th

Joyce on 4th is a Mission classic pub. The inside looks like you’re stepping back in time to a British pub, complete with rich dark woods and polished brass bar rail. The shining gem of Joyce is definitely its expansive patio, conveniently located on a corner lot. Perfect for people watching and celebrating your favourite sports team wins! Joyce is also well known for its fabulous daily deals menu, with items like Fish & Chip Fridays ($9.99 for a single fish and chips?! Sign us up!) or Taco Tuesdays, with $2.99 tacos from 4pm to close and $6.25 margaritas to get the party going.

Round up your favourite buddies and head down to Joyce for a thoroughly British experience.

Bar Bincho

This newcomer is quickly becoming a Fourth Street favourite. Bar Bincho offers up super cute small sidewalk patio alongside the building on 22nd Avenue. Removed a little from the hustle and bustle, you won’t have to raise your voice to hear your dining companion but you’ll still be able to enjoy the sunshine and people watching.

Bar Bincho is a sister restaurant to Ikemen Ramen Bar, and offers up an extensive and exciting sake menu and creative sharing dishes like chicken chips, tako (octopus) salad, and honey butter wings. If you’re craving summertime BBQ, double down on their kushiyaki menu and give the negi bacon, scallop and chili oil chicken breast skewers a try.

Do you have a favourite go-to patio on Fourth Street that we didn’t include in our blog? There are over 28 patios all along 4th Street! We’d love to hear about it! Tag us in your patio photos with #SeeYouOn4th on our Instagram, Facebook and Twitter accounts.
