Fourth Street Summer Sippin

There’s really nothing better than a nice sunny day with cocktails and friends on the patio. But for most of the downtown living community, our 3×5 windy patios can barely accommodate enough seating for one, not to mention that most of us are not pro bartenders.

But this summer, Fourth Street has all the answers to our woes. Dozens of restaurants with well stocked bars, experienced mixologists and enough patio seating for you and your friends to take advantage of.

This month I was determined to hit up all the hot spots along Fourth in the search of this summer’s BEST Cocktails; what I learnt along the way is that this task is just too large for one person to take on!

That said, I was still totally successful in my mission to help you plan a great start to your summer sipping guide along 4th St.

These are a few of the summer’s brightest stars when it comes to creative cocktails… and where to find them!

Bocce

This bright and vibrant Italian eatery is one of my favourite places to dine in the city, and their Boschetto Pizza & Carbonara pasta are my regular go-tos.

When it comes to their libations Bocce mixes up the perfect cocktails to wash it all down.

Al Capone (2oz $12)

Hendrick’s Gin, Cucumber, Basil and topped with Cracked Pepper.

Light and fresh.

Beverage Happy Hour: 7 Days a Week from 3-6pm

½ price of all cocktails.
$5 House Wine
$5 16oz Peroni

Anejo

Serving Mexican cuisine and Margaritas, Anejo’s claim to fame is having the largest tequila offering in the city. With over 200 bottles and new ones being added all the time, summer will end before you complete your quest to sample them all.

Anjeo’s menu features 11 permanent margaritas, but I suggest you order one of their ever changing ‘featured margaritas‘ and you’ll be sure to yell Ole’!

Mescal Paloma Margarita 1.5oz $9.25

Mescal, Grapefruit, with a splash of Fresca.

Smokey and citrusy, this margarita has me longing for a summer’s evening around a campfire.

Food & Beverage Happy Hour: 7 Days a Week from 3-5pm

Half Price off all Tequila
Half Price of Tacos
$6 Margaritas
$6 Beer

Wurst

Calgary’s only German styled modern pub takes you on an Oompa adventure every week without ever needing to leave the city.

Although Wurst has some amazing cocktails on their menu like the Blackberry Bramble (Botanist Gin, Blackberry Preserves, Fresh Lemon and Sage), this is Bavarian styled Beer Hall so this is my recommendation for the summer: Schofferhofer! The world’s first hefeweizen grapefruit beer – perfect for summer.

Think less hops and all citrus. Schoffenhofer tastes like an ice-cold grapefruit soda. With only a 2.5% alcohol content it’s the perfect ‘beer’ to add a flavoured vodka shot to! (The bartenders recommend Vanilla or Blueberry!)

Food & Beverage Happy Hour: 7 Days a Week from 3-5pm

Half off appetizers
$5 pints (includes the Schofferhofer)
$5 glasses of house win
$12 half liters of House Wine

Vin Room

Vin’s roof-top patio goes unnoticed by most people passing by, which makes it the perfect private place to hide out while cocktailing.

Primarily a ‘Wine Bar’, Vin Room has just launched a special summertime spritzer.

The Amaro

Campari and Gin mixed with a bend of lemon, lime, orange and soda.

This refreshing drink will have you cooled off in no time!

Food & Beverage Happy Hour: 7 Days a Week from 3-9pm and 9pm- close

Special priced appetizers (most under $5)
$7 6oz wine pours of a rotating Sommeliers selection

Shokunin

Shokunin was born on the idea of providing exceptional food and crafted cocktails in a room that is all-inclusive. Their crafted cocktails are some of the most unique, complex and interesting in the city!

Using a well-curated collection of Japanese Whiskeys, Shokunin’s master cocktailists will wow your palate.

Kafun (Japanese word meaning ‘Blossom’) $17

House Fermented Apricot Blossom Syrup, Suntori Whiskey, Lemon & Egg Whites

A bit smoky and a bit sweet, it’s a perfectly balanced cocktail.

Coming this month, the Scorpion. A cocktail made with a quarter ounce of Sriracha, it’s unbelievably delicious!

Ramen Time:

Stop by after 10pm for the best ramen in Calgary!

Anju

Anju offers a modern twist on Korean cuisine with their Maple Hill Gochujang Chicken Wings – a must order every time I visit.

And their Korean inspired cocktails are no exception.

Back to Black $14, minimum 2oz

Bulleit Bourbon, St-Germain, Blackberry, Lime and Shiso

Juicy Juicy Juicy! Not too sweet, not too sour, just perfect!

Patio Beers everyday:

$5 Draft Beers on the Patio

The Mission

Mission has a new patio and brussels sprouts that call my name daily… And what better way to wash down a large helping of sprouts than a large helping of Sangria!?

Ritual Pitchers of Sangria 44$ – I went with the classic “Sangria o the day” with St. Remy Brandy, Cointreau, Frozen Fruit, OJ, Grapefruit juice, and Red or White wine.

Social Hour:

Everyday 3-6, and all day Thurs/Sun.

Half priced XXX, 6$ Wine, Rose, and Prosecco

6$ Jim Beam Old Fashioneds

6$ Draughts, and Bottles of beer.

Summer in Calgary is never as long as we all wish it was, so grab some friends, head down to Fourth Street and enjoy some patio time and summer sips!… I’ll see you there!
