Summertime in Calgary is precious because we only get it for about thirty seconds, and there are so many incredible things to do around town! How can you choose? To help you out, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite local festivals and happenings this summer.

Sled Island

Since 2007, Sled Island has given Calgary new life with thoughtful, eclectic programming and independent spirit. This one-of-a-kind festival brings together comedy, live music, art, and welcomes over 30,000 visitors each year.

If you’ve never been before, 2019 is your year to explore Sled Island! More than 35 venues host a wide variety of programs – suitable for families and adults. The best way to experience the festival is with your all-access wristband, which can be purchased on the Sled Island website.

Because Sled Island takes place all over Calgary, plenty of Sled Island events are happening right along 4th Street! Venues include: Central Memorial Park, Memorial Park Library, Pin-Bar, Hillier Block and more! Stop by one of the many nearby restaurants and bars for a quick bite or drink between events. We recommend Good Earth Coffeehouse, Anju’s patio, Famoso or Buttermilk Fine Waffles for your food fixes!

Folk Fest

Folk Fest is one of Calgary’s most beloved festivals – and for good reason! Combining global talent, food trucks, vendors and the beautiful, natural surroundings of Prince’s Island Park, this family-friendly event is perfect for channeling your Coachella vibes. Not sure what to wear? We’ve got a few recommendations in our post Fashionable on Fourth.

Before heading to the Island for the day, make sure you caffeinate at Purple Perk or grab a delicious pastry and coffee to go at La Boulangerie. After a day in the sun, jamming to music and shopping at the vendors, swing by Seed N Salt or Aida’s Bistro for a refreshing, healthy supper.

Calgary Stampede

Yee-haw! It’s almost time for Calgary Stampede – the greatest outdoor show on earth! For wonderful ten days, Calgary becomes the wild west with everyone donning their finest giddy-up gear. Concerts, midway, fun food, beer gardens, rodeo, chuckwagon races and plenty more await you all at the Stampede grounds!

Conveniently located near Fourth Street is the Erlton entrance to the grounds. Get ready for the grandstand with a blow out at Butter Beauty Parlour or pick up some new outfits for the kiddos at Purr Petite. If midway snacks aren’t your favourite, you can always pop by Amaranth to pick up some healthier choices.

GlobalFest is quickly becoming one of Calgary’s top summer must-do events! This multi-day festival has fireworks at night, featuring a different country’s pyrotechnic expert displays, and the OneWorld Festival brings together food, music, performances and family-friendly activities from countries around the world.

If this fun festival gets you in a global mood, you can find plenty along Fourth Street to satisfy your cravings for culture! Try dining in Japan at Shokunin, or French fare at Le Petit Boeuf. You can also try German food (and beer!) at WURST or sample tequila and tacos at Anejo.

Country Thunder

This weekend festival takes place every year in August and features some of the biggest names and hottest talent in the country music scene. Perfect for continuing the Stampede vibes, this event takes place in the north at Prairie Winds Park. This event takes place during the day only, so you’ll have plenty of time to jump on the C-Train and make it down to Fourth Street for plenty more sunshine, patio beers and bites at Joyce on 4th or Earl’s Tin Palace.

Fourth Street: one street, a thousand avenues to summer fun! What’s your favourite summertime festival in Calgary? Share it with us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
