We are all about this place! We had a lesson in learning when on a recent trip to Neal’s Yard Remedies! We know the ladies of NYR are always conjuring up some pretty amazing recipes (check them out on Instagram), but we had no idea how beneficial they were to our health, and that Neal’s Yard Remedies carries all the herbs and spices in store for you to purchase!

So what are we whipping up today?? Well… let us tell you!

Burdock Earth Elixir

Here’s why NYR love’s Burdock root so much!

We love burdock root because it is absolutely packed with minerals (like chromium and iron) and acts as an adaptogen (meaning it helps the body respond to stress) while also helping to support the liver and purify the body. It’s one of the first herbs used when dealing with skin issues like eczema, psoriasis and acne!

Now time to get preparing.

Ingredients:

  • 1 potful water (4-6 cups)
  • 1-4 tablespoons of burdock root
  • 1/2 c homemade hazelnut mylk
  • 1 pinch of cinnamon
  • 1 pinch of ground cloves
  • 1 pinch of nutmeg
  • 1 pinch of cardamon
  • 1/2 vanilla bean
  • 1 tablespoon of organic maple syrup
  • pinch of sea-salt to taste

Instructions:

1. Add burdock root and water into a pot; bring to a boil and let simmer for 20 min
2. Using a strainer or a nut mylk bag, strain burdock root tea; add to 1/2 cup of the tea in the blender
3. Add homemade nutmylk, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, cademon and vanilla bean into the burdock tea in the blender
4. Blend all ingredients
5. Pour into your favorite mug (life is too short for ugly dishes!); mix maple syrup and add a dash of salt
6. Enjoy!!

Okay, now that you have drink in hand and are unwinding we got to know Lisa Costello, CEO and Neal’s Yard Remedies a little bit better!

How long has NYR’s been on 4th street?

Lisa: We very excitedly opened Neal’s Yard Remedies on 4th Street in May 2014. It has been an amazing year and a half and we love being a part of the community!

What was the inspiration behind the start of your business?

Lisa: Starting Neal’s Yard Remedies for us was about inspiring people to think about life more holistically about their lives, from thinking about what we put on our skin, in our bodies, how we treat people and the environment. We aspire to be a tool for people to live life with a respect for environment and people, without compromising how beautiful we can feel. We get to make people feel beautiful every day, and are so lucky to call that our job!

What’s something people might not know about NYR’s Canada?

Lisa: We are family owned, family operated and family loved! We all work together to share our passion for organic skincare with Calgary!

There is SO many fun things in the shop, but tell us what’s one fun fact?

Lisa: There are 170 roses that go into one bottle of Rose Facial Oil (http://www.nealsyardremedies.ca/products/rose-facial-oil). That’s a lot of roses to harvest sustainably, which we do by working with women’s cooperatives in Turkey. The women dance and sing while working – a true sign of happiness!

That’s amazing, i love the emotion going into making that product is just pure joy and happiness. 4th Street loves having you, what you love most about 4th Street?

Lisa: We love 4th Street for bringing together businesses and residents in beautiful harmony. On one street you can shop for your groceries, visit your doctor, purchase your skincare, enjoy a beautiful meal with friends, buy linens for your Christmas dinner and stock up on reading material. This is our favourite street in Calgary as it really does have everything!

And of course… Your one guilty pleasure?

Lisa: A cheeky glass of organic wine. Or two…
That’s also our guilty pleasure! Life can be busy, what’s your favourite way to unwind and favourite product to unwind?

Lisa: My favourite way to unwind is by spoiling myself head to toe pampering. I start with our Rosemary & Cedarwood Hair Treatment to stimulate and hydrate my scalp, followed by our White Tea Facial Mask to restore moisture into the skin, a generous portion of Comfrey & Mallow Foot Balm to keep winter feet at bay and finally a touch of Citrus Hand Softener. Making time for self-care is so important, especially around the holidays!
